Welcome to Year 5

Penguin Class

Welcome to Year 5.  We are very much looking forward to this academic year and have lots of fun things planned for the children.  Please click here for the Year 5 curriculum map.

Term 1

During this term we will be learning about the Tudors.  We will be looking at how the Tudor era started, including the War of the Roses.  We will be making Tudor foods using traditional Tudor recipes and we will also be looking at the unique Tudor architecture.  We will also be looking at King Henry VIII and his six wives and Queen Elizabeth I.  We will be exploring all of this through music, art, design and technology, role play and much more!

In maths, we will be looking at place value, shape, statistics and fractions.  This will include negative numbers, reading numbers to one million, geometric shapes, data handling and equivalent fractions.

In English we will be exploring the descriptive writing.  We will be doing this by exploring the text 'Treason' which will link to our topic of the Tudors.  We will also begin to learn about new spelling patterns and looking at relative clauses and modal verbs.

In science we will be learning about the different stages of human development.  We will be using this to represent data scientifically.

In RE we will be learning about the how different religions represent God/Gods.  This will include learning about atheists, theists and agnostics.

Spellings and homework will be sent home every Friday and is to be returned for marking the following Wednesday.  Please encourage our children to look up any words they do not know in a dictionary.  It will also help handwriting, punctuation and sentence structure if your children put their spellings in sentences when practising.  We are still collecting Red Teds so please continue reading daily at home with your child and initial their diary to let us know they’ve read.

The Timetable

PE will be on a Wednesday and this term we will be learning about tennis and hockey.  Therefore children will need to have both indoor and outdoor PE kits in school.

This year will are very lucky to be able to have violin lessons which will take place every Friday.

Many thanks for your continued support.
