Science at Dymchurch 

Wherever you look, whatever you do and wherever you go, Science is all around us. Human nature is to be curious about the world we live in and children enjoy exploring and asking questions. From an early age we encourage children to ask ‘Why?’ As educators we may not always have the answer but it is fun finding out and making sense of what is happening around us. 

At Dymchurch Primary School, Science is taught with adherence to the National Curriculum, with support from the Kent Science Scheme. The National Curriculum emphasises skills in ‘Working Scientifically’ to underpin and apply ‘Knowledge and Understanding’. Scientific enquiry is at the heart of our curriculum at Dymchurch as we believe the skills to work scientifically are widely transferrable and are key in paving the way for many future career paths. Our Intent: 

  • Children are curious about the world they live in and are given opportunities to explore the local area in different ways. 
  • The outdoor classroom is utilised as an important teaching tool in different contexts. 
  • Through local links, trips and visits, children are exposed to a range of STEM careers. 
  • Children use Scientific vocabulary to talk about, as well as write about, what they know. Science vocabulary is reinforced outside of Science lessons; for example, through the literature children read and when talking about everyday experiences.  
  • Children are confident to talk about their ideas and explore these in practical investigations with increasing ownership and independence as they move through Key Stages. 
  • Children have a secure, phase appropriate understanding of Working Scientifically; they experience different types of enquiry and are familiar with the parts of a scientific write-up.   
  • Children apply skills learnt in Maths, to interpret and present patterns in data.
