Orca Class - Year 6
Our curriculum map will tell you what we will cover in each subject throughout the academic year.
For more information about what we get up to in class each week, please have a look at our weekly newsletter below.
PE is on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure that your child comes into school dressed in PE kit for the day. Any earrings will need to be removed or covered with micropore medical tape during PE lessons (tape will need to be supplied by parents).
Homework – A piece of Maths and English homework is given out each week on Mondays, to be handed in on Fridays. Spellings are also given out with the homework, for a spelling test on Monday.
REMINDER: Please encourage your child to read daily. It is still extremely important, even in Year 6, to read to an adult. This will help your child develop their comprehension skills and broaden their vocabulary. Please remember to sign your child’s contact book to show you have heard them read.
SATs are an important part of Year 6 and we’ll be working hard throughout the year to secure the skills and knowledge to enable the children to succeed in their assessments. However, we want the children to understand they are SO MUCH MORE THAN A SCORE.
The SATs tests assess children’s competencies in Maths, Reading & Writing which are, unquestionably, vital skills and set them up for future success in Secondary education and beyond. But, and it’s a big but, these tests do not show what fantastic dancers, artists, golfers, singers, gamers, Lego builders and chefs we have in our midst!
So, while we want the children to try their best and develop their skills and understanding in these core areas, it’s important for them to know that this is just a small measure of their all-round-awesomeness!
Year 6 will complete their SATS in May 2025. More information will be shared in due course.
Thank you for in advance for your support with their learning. We are really looking forward to working with your children this year!
